Car rental without a credit card in Switzerland
Yes, you can rent a car in Switzerland without a credit card. The big rental counters want a card in your name, but many local rental companies take the deposit by debit card, TWINT or bank transfer.

No credit card, or one with a low limit? You can still rent a car in Switzerland. The card is only needed for the deposit, and many rental companies accept other ways to pay it. What changes is where you rent: the international counters at airports and stations are strict, local rental companies are often more flexible.
Why rental companies ask for a credit card
A credit card lets the rental company block money without taking it from your account. Europcar Switzerland, for example, blocks the estimated rental price plus a fixed amount that depends on the car category, and does not debit it at pickup. When the car is back and the final invoice is ready, the company charges what you owe and releases the rest.
The card also lets the company charge costs that show up later. A speeding or parking fine can arrive weeks after you return the car, and the rental company receives it first because the car is registered in its name.
What the deposit covers
Europcar’s Swiss terms list the costs a renter is liable for. Most rental companies work the same way, so a deposit typically covers:
- the rental price, if it is not paid yet
- fuel or charging, if the car comes back with less than at pickup
- damage, up to the insurance excess in your contract
- traffic and parking fines, often plus an administration fee
- extra days if you return the car late
The deposit is not a fee. If nothing is owed, you get all of it back.
Ways to pay the deposit without a credit card
| Method | How it works | Where it usually works |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card (Visa or Mastercard) | Amount is blocked or debited, then refunded | Some international brands, many local companies |
| TWINT | Paid in the app, refunded after the return | Local companies |
| Bank transfer | You pay before pickup, it is transferred back after the return | Local companies, longer rentals |
| Cash | Paid at pickup against a receipt | Some smaller local companies only |
Check two things on your debit card. First, the logo: Avis Switzerland accepts Visa and Mastercard debit cards but not cards with only a Maestro logo. Second, the name: the card must be in the main driver’s name everywhere. With a debit card, the deposit may be taken from your balance rather than just blocked, so keep enough money in the account for the whole rental.
Why airport counters are strict and local companies are flexible
International brands rent to thousands of travellers they will not see again, often for a few days. A card in the renter’s name is their reliable way to recover costs that appear after the car is back, so their rules are fixed. As of October 2026:
- Europcar Switzerland wants a personal credit or debit card in the main driver’s name and does not accept cash, prepaid cards or someone else’s card.
- Avis Switzerland accepts Visa and Mastercard (debit or credit), American Express, Diners and Discover, but no prepaid cards at pickup. For high-value cars it may ask for two credit cards.
Local companies work differently. They rent for weeks or months, check your ID and licence in person and know where the car is parked. That lets them accept a deposit by TWINT or bank transfer, and some take cash. The trade-off: conditions vary from one company to the next.
Before you pay, get three things in writing: the deposit amount, the payment method and the date by which you get it back.
When you get the deposit back
- Credit card hold: the rental company releases it after the final invoice. After that, Europcar points out, timing depends on your bank.
- Debit card, TWINT or bank transfer: the money comes back as a new payment. Count on several working days.
- If something is damaged: the company may keep part of the deposit until the cost is clear.

A Swiss bank card after you arrive
Once you live in Switzerland, a Swiss bank account and debit card make deposits easier. Banks set their own rules: according to the canton of St. Gallen’s official guide for newcomers, each bank decides which residence permits it accepts, so ask your bank which documents it needs. PostFinance lets everyone resident in Switzerland apply for an account, in person at a branch.

Questions
Can I rent a car in Switzerland with a debit card?
Often, yes. Avis Switzerland accepts Visa and Mastercard debit cards in the main driver's name, and many local rental companies accept debit cards too. Maestro-only cards and prepaid cards are usually refused.
Can I pay the car rental deposit in cash?
Not at the big international brands: Europcar Switzerland's terms rule out cash. Some smaller local rental companies accept a cash deposit, so ask before you book and keep the receipt.
How long does it take to get my deposit back?
A hold on a credit card is released after the final invoice, but your bank decides when the amount is available again. A deposit paid by debit card, TWINT or bank transfer comes back as a new payment, which usually takes several working days.
Does Kario need a credit card?
No. Depending on the rental partner, you pay the deposit by credit card, debit card, TWINT or bank transfer. Tell us in the request form that you have no credit card.
Can I use a card from a bank abroad?
That depends on the rental company. Most want a Visa or Mastercard card in the main driver's name. The rental partner confirms which payment methods work for you with the offer.
