Zug is a small canton with short distances, but daily life here often spans several places: a flat in Cham or Steinhausen, an office in Baar or Rotkreuz, meetings in Zürich and weekends in the mountains. Car hire by the month covers the time until your own car is ready, without a lease or a Swiss credit history.

Commuting from Zug: train or car?

Zug has fast rail links, and for the city centre of Zürich or Lucerne the train is hard to beat. Fastest weekday morning trains in the timetable for October 2026:

From To Fastest train
Zug Zürich HB 24 minutes
Baar Zürich HB 24 minutes
Zug Lucerne 19 minutes
Rotkreuz Lucerne 14 minutes
Cham Zürich HB 37 to 40 minutes

A car makes sense where the train stops short: offices away from the station, school runs, the weekly shop for a family, ski weekends or late evenings. By road, the A4 through the Knonauer Amt connects Zug with the Zürich-West junction. Its last section opened in November 2009. Towards Lucerne, the A14 starts at the Rütihof junction near Rotkreuz.

Roadworks on the A4 west of Lake Zug

The Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) is renovating the A4 between the Rütihof junction and Küssnacht, a stretch that opened in 1981. Main works on the first section, between Rütihof and the Rotkreuz exit, ran from March to mid-October 2026, with lane reductions and night closures of the ramps at Rotkreuz. The renovation continues until 2027, so check ASTRA’s traffic information if you commute via Rotkreuz.

Parking in the city of Zug

Sort out where the car stays overnight before it arrives. The city of Zug’s rules, as of October 2026:

  • Night parking needs a permit. Anyone who leaves a car on public ground between 22:00 and 7:00 needs an official permit. For a car it costs CHF 30 a month.
  • Resident parking card: CHF 30 a month. It lets you park longer than 120 minutes on weekdays from 7:00 to 19:00 in your own zone. Zone 4 has no resident cards.
  • Visitor card: CHF 5 a day.
  • City car parks: Altstadt-Casino, Neustadtplatz, Frauensteinmatt and Arena are open 24 hours a day, and all have charging stations for electric cars.

The city’s page does not say whether a rental car qualifies for a resident or night parking card. Ask the city’s parking office (Parkraumbewirtschaftung) before you count on one.

For a month or more, a private parking space is the simplest answer. Ask your landlord or employer whether a garage or outdoor space is free from your start date.

Baar, Cham and the other municipalities set their own parking rules.
