Monthly car rental in Zurich

Renting a car by the month in Zürich works like a flat rate. You choose the size, the start date and how long you need the car. A checked local rental partner near Zürich sends you one monthly price that already covers insurance, the motorway vignette, servicing and unlimited kilometres. One month is fine: the minimum rental is 1 week, and you can usually extend month by month.

Parking a rental car in the city of Zürich

Parking needs a plan before the car arrives. As of October 2026, the city’s rules are:

• Blue zone with a parking disc: Monday to Saturday you may park for one hour between 8:00 and 11:30 and between 13:30 and 18:00. If you arrive between 11:30 and 13:30, you may stay until 14:30. If you arrive between 18:00 and 8:00, the disc is valid until 9:00. Electronic parking discs are not allowed, and turning the disc without moving the car is fined.
• Resident parking card: the city only issues it for cars registered in your name. A rental car is registered to the rental company, so don’t count on one.
• Day permits: CHF 15 per calendar day, or CHF 150 for a block of ten. They are valid in all blue zones of the city. Kreis 1 (postcode 8001) has no blue zone spaces, so use a car park in the old town.

For a month or more, a private parking space is usually the simplest answer. Ask your landlord, the building management or your employer whether a garage or outdoor space is free before your start date.

These rules apply to the city of Zürich. Winterthur, Kloten and the other municipalities set their own.

What you need

• Driving licence: Swiss or foreign. According to the canton of Zürich, you can drive on a foreign licence for 12 months from the date you entered Switzerland. After that you need a Swiss licence. Read how to exchange a foreign driving licence.
• Passport or ID card: a Swiss residence permit is not required, and neither is a Swiss credit history.
