How much is it to rent a car for a month in Switzerland? With Kario, a small car starts at CHF 690 a month and a compact at CHF 790, with insurance, the motorway vignette, servicing and unlimited kilometres included. You can rent from 1 week, by the week or by the month, and usually extend month by month. The cars come from checked local rental companies, and the offer arrives within 2 working hours.
What a month costs
| Size | Good for | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Small | City driving and easy parking | from CHF 690 |
| Compact | Two suitcases and a weekly shop | from CHF 790 |
| Estate or SUV | Families, ski trips and moving boxes | from CHF 990 |
| Van, 7 seats (on request) | Larger families and big moves | from CHF 1,290 |
These are example prices. Your offer shows the exact amount.
- Included: insurance, motorway vignette, servicing, unlimited kilometres.
- Listed in your offer: delivery costs and the insurance excess.
- Your own costs: fuel and parking.
What drives the price
- Car size. The biggest factor, as the table shows.
- Start date and availability. In school holidays and other busy weeks fewer cars are free, so the model and price on offer can change. Requesting a few days ahead gives the rental partner more choice.
- Kilometres. Kario offers include unlimited kilometres. Many other monthly offers come with a kilometre allowance and a charge for every extra kilometre, so check this before you compare prices.
- Insurance excess. This is the amount you pay yourself if the car is damaged. It differs between offers, so look at it together with the monthly price. Kario lists it in the offer.
- Delivery. Delivery to your home, office or temporary flat is priced in the offer. You can also pick the car up near Zürich.

Typical conditions in Switzerland in autumn 2026. Details vary by provider.
Rental counter. Ideal for a few days. For a whole month at an airport counter you pay day or week rates that follow demand, often with a kilometre cap, and options such as a lower excess or an extra driver come on top. Ask for the 30-day total.
Car subscription. As of October 2026, one of the larger Swiss subscription providers advertises its lowest rates at around CHF 250 a month, but for a 48-month term with a down payment. It also charges a one-off fee of CHF 390 and CHF 195 for delivery to your door, and cars in stock take 14 to 21 days. The car is registered in your canton of residence, so you need a Swiss address. A subscription can make sense once you are settled and want a car for a longer period. Our guide to car subscription, leasing and rental compares them in detail.
Monthly rental. Built for the first weeks and months: when you have just moved here, are waiting for your own car or your lease has ended. One price per month, without a Swiss permit or credit history.
Comparing offers? Put the monthly price, the kilometres, the excess, the delivery and the deposit side by side. A low daily rate with a kilometre cap can end up costing more over a month than a fixed monthly price with unlimited kilometres.

After the first months
- Extending: most rentals can be extended month by month. The notice period is stated in your offer.
- Your licence: according to the Federal Roads Office, once you have lived in Switzerland for 12 months, without spending more than three months in a row abroad, you must exchange your foreign licence for a Swiss one. This also applies to licences from EU and EFTA countries. Read how to exchange a foreign driving licence.
- Your own car: when you are ready, compare buying a car in Switzerland with a subscription or a lease. A car registered in your name needs its own insurance (see car insurance in Switzerland) and a motorway vignette. The vignette costs CHF 40 and is valid from 1 December of the year before the one printed on it until 31 January of the year after.
